FAQ the Beer Game

The Beer Game don't start

Below five common reasons/workarounds are described

1. Add the Beer Game to Javas "Exception Site List" in order to make it work after Javas latest security updates. Follow the instructions below:

  • Open your computers Control Panel
  • Find and open Java Control Panel (you can also directly search for Java in the start menu)
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Choose Edit Site List and add "https://beergame.pipechain.com/" and "http://beergame.pipechain.com/"

2. Test different browsers.

The Beer Game is a Java application and it therefore do not work in Chrome. Read more here: http://java.com/en/download/faq/chrome.xml

3. Update your Java. The Beer Game require at least Java 7.

Download the latest version here: http://java.com/en/download/

4. Empty the Java temporary cache by entering Java control panel clicking on the "Settings..."-button and then the "Delete Files..."-button. It can also be a good idea to "Restore Security Prompts" under the Security tab.

5. If the screen below is shown after you have created/joined a game, the most common problem is that your (organisations) firewall blocks port 8081 that the Beer Game need to use in order to make it multi player. Since this issue is most common in large organisations, you can first try the simulation on a private computer outside the organisations network and see if it works there. If that works you vill have to talk to your IT-department.

I can’t get the Beer Game to work on my handheld Apple or Android device

Since java do no work on most smartphones and tablets, the Beer Game will not run on these devices. There are workarounds with browsers that runs the java applications on remote servers that can be used. Since the Beer Game is a free simulation we do not have the resources to develop or optimise it for different devices. Pleas let us know if you would like to help us with this.

Does it cost anything to use the Beer Game?

Our version of the Beer Game is free to use for universities and NPO's. MA-system and PipeChain are consulting and IT companies within the supply chain area. We find this topic so important that we think that everyone should be able to experience the Bullwhip Effect. However if you have ideas on how to make the game better and have good knowledge in Java you are welcome to contribute. Since we do not have any income from the game we are unfortunately not able to spend the resources that we would like to develop our Beer Game. Please send us a mail if you or your organisation would like to contribute. We can also discuss possibilities to build branded versions.
